Sony has announced a new gaming monitor aimed at the highest echelons of the competitive gaming market. The screen utilizes an advanced OLED panel and offers an exceptionally high refresh rate. The introduction fits into a broader trend in which manufacturers are increasingly focusing on extremely fast displays, particularly aimed at esports and professional gamers.
27-inch OLED screen with exceptionally high refresh rate
The new monitor features a 27-inch Tandem MoLED panel with a maximum resolution of 2560×1440 pixels (QHD). At this resolution, the screen achieves a refresh rate of up to 540Hz, which is already significantly higher than most current gaming monitors.
For users who want to take advantage of even higher speeds, Sony offers the option to switch the resolution back to 720p. In that mode, the screen can reach a maximum refresh rate of 720Hz. This makes it one of the fastest monitors currently announced.
Focused on competitive gaming
Sony is clearly targeting the esports scene, which is also growing strongly in the Netherlands and Europe with popular titles such as Counter-Strike and Valorant. The monitor therefore features a special ’tournament mode’. In this mode, a smaller 24-inch display is simulated, with resolutions of 1080p or 1332p. This format aligns better with what is often used at professional tournaments.
In addition, Sony has developed its own technology to limit motion blur. According to the manufacturer, this keeps images clearer and sharper during fast action. This is particularly relevant in competitive shooters, where reaction time and visual clarity are crucial.
Design and practical features
The monitor features an anti-reflective coating, which should reduce annoying reflections. This can be an advantage, particularly in brightly lit rooms, such as many home offices or gaming setups.
There are also adjustment options in terms of ergonomics. The screen can be tilted from -5 to 35 degrees, allowing users to adjust their setup to their liking. This kind of flexibility is important for prolonged use, for example during intensive gaming sessions.
Higher price than the competition
With an introductory price of €1,350, scheduled for June, Sony clearly positions this monitor in the premium segment. As such, the price is higher than comparable models from competitors such as ASUS and LG, which use the same OLED panel.
Although those alternatives are less explicitly aimed at gaming, they are significantly cheaper. Comparable screens currently cost around €1,100 and €850. This price difference can be an important factor for many consumers in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe when choosing a new monitor.
Conclusion
With this new OLED gaming monitor, Sony is firmly committed to top performance for competitive gamers. The combination of an extremely high refresh rate, flexible resolution settings, and specific esports features makes the screen technically impressive. At the same time, the relatively high price can be a barrier, especially considering cheaper alternatives with comparable panel technology.
